Hair Extension Certification: Common Questions

What hair extension methods do you teach?

I-Tip, tape-in, and weft, both machine and hand tied. Our two day course covers all three. Our one day course covers one method of your choosing.

Do I need a cosmetology license to take the course?

That is Monti's rule. You need to be a licensed cosmetologist, currently enrolled in cosmetology school, or a graduate of a cosmetology or beauty school.

We have turned people away, including people who wanted a career change but had never done hair. You need a basic understanding of the hair industry to take this course. If you are not there yet, start with beauty school. We will be here when you graduate.

What makes Monti different from other extension education?

We are not just trying to sell you a product. We are here to provide education.

Every Monti educator is a real working stylist with years of behind the chair experience. We are not brand ambassadors. We teach from experience, passion and integrity, and we all wear hair extensions ourselves.

We also teach the 212 degree mindset. At 211 degrees water is hot, but at 212 it boils. One degree can make a big difference, so we teach you to be 212 degrees with your installations, your consultations and your practices. A little bit better than the competition.

What is the Monti hair extension philosophy?

We teach and preach three core values for comfortable, damage free hair extensions: no tight tension, no over direction, and equal weight on all methods. Those three values apply to every method we teach, along with section perfection on every install.

How is the certification course structured, and what are the class times?

Theory first, then hands on.

Two day courses are held on select Sundays and Mondays from 10 to 5. Day one is theory, so you understand all the concepts that go into the decisions for an install. Day two is hands on, learning all three extension methods with an educator watching your work.

One day courses are held on Mondays from 11 to 4 and cover one method of your choosing.

Partner school dates can fall on other days, so check the listing for the date you want.

How many students are in a class?

One educator for every five students. You get personalized attention and someone actually watching your hands.

What is included with the course?

Every two day course includes a professional starter kit, with one bundle of hair for each of the three methods. The kit carries your working tools: installation pliers, copper beads, silicone beads, a sectioning comb, looper tools, replacement tape in single sided and double sided, needles, thread and clips. You also get a workbook, scripts and quizzes.

One day students train with practice hair and take home a student workbook and aftercare materials.

At the end, you receive your certificate: the Monti Extension certificate of 2-Day completion or the Monti Extension certificate of 1-Day completion.

Do I need to bring a model?

No. We practice on mannequins, and we will provide one if you do not have your own. It is wise to invest in your own mannequin, though. You take your installation work home with you, hair and all.

Are payment plans available?

Yes. Checkout offers Sezzle and Shop Pay, so you can split your payment into smaller pieces.

What is your cancellation policy?

There are no refunds. If your plans change, your payment becomes credit for a future course.

What is the difference between the one day and the two day course?

The two day course covers three methods, I-Tip, tape-in and weft. The one day course covers one method, and it is a good fit if you already know what you want to specialize in.

Where are your hair extension classes held?

Our home classroom is at 2040 Union Street in San Francisco. We also teach at partner schools around the Bay Area, including Paul Mitchell The School in San Jose and Cinta Aveda Institute in San Francisco. Deb also travels across the country to certify stylists in the Monti Method.

Where does Monti hair come from?

The hair we use and provide, Monti Extensions, is ethically sourced Indian temple hair. It is single donor and it has gone through strict quality control.

In Deb's words: "There are a lot of sourcing untruths in this industry. My last name is on the brand, so that says a lot!"

What happens after the class?

The mentorship continues. Students can text questions to 415-802-9230 and get real answers from real extensionists. A digital companion app to support Monti students after the course is on the way.

Will this course guarantee me a successful extension business?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise.

We promise you a thorough education and hair we can stand behind. We refuse to promise that building a hair extension career is easy. It takes a lot of practice and transparency as you are building. It takes dedication, patience and perseverance.

What we can promise is that you will leave properly trained, not just certified, and that our mentorship continues after the class ends.

Do you offer online hair extension training?

Not right now. Our courses are in person, because hands on technique is the heart of this training. Digital training for Monti students is coming with the Monti app.
